“One nation, one China”, 17 August 2019

The idea of “one China” is a key part of the Chinese Communist Party’s rhetoric of the Chinese Dream, focusing on the “rejuvenation of the Chinese nation” and the unity of the Chinese nation. It is this rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and unity of the Chinese nation which perpetuates ongoing geopolitical tensions in relation to China and Taiwan. These pro-Beijing protesters were attending as a counter-protest to a Hong Kong pro-democracy protest taking place in London, with chants of “one country” being shouted by the pro-Beijing protesters, with the protesters in support of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement responding with “two systems”. “One country, two systems” is the formula for governing Hong Kong agreed upon by the Chinese Government when negotiating the Sino-British Joint Declaration 1984 with the United Kingdom, providing a structure for the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China.
